Don’t be afraid- trust God

Writer's picture: Kristina TrottKristina Trott

Are you waiting for God to heal you? I want to look at 3 Biblical records of people who had to wait for God to heal them.

Hezekiah, the king of Judah, was told by the prophet, Isaiah, that he was going to die. Hezekiah fell on his knees appealing to God’s compassion and God replied, “I have heard your prayer, I have seen your tears. Behold, I am healing you; on the third day you shall go up to the house of the LORD” (2 Kings 20:5 Amp).

Hezekiah found this too hard to believe and he went on and asked for a sign and Isaiah told him that the shadow on the sundial would go back 10 steps. Miraculously turning back time convinced Hezekiah that he would be completely healed.

When we get to the New Testament we read about the 10 lepers who Jesus sent away covered in leprous sores to go and show themselves to the priests. As they went away they were healed. (Luke 17:11-19). Again, the lepers weren’t healed instantaneously but as they went away in faith they were healed. They didn’t ask for a sign - they simply believed.

Then we come to the narrative about Jairus, the ruler of the synagogue, who had a 12 year old daughter who was on the verge of death. Against his theology and what was expected of him in Jewish circles, he came to Jesus to anxiously ask Jesus to heal her.

As Jesus went with him a woman with an unstemmed flow of blood for 12 years touched Jesus’ clothing believing that she would be healed if she did so. She was healed immediately and Jesus stopped in his tracks to investigate what had just happened as He had felt the Holy Spirit power flowing out of Him.

Can you imagine how frustrated Jairus must have felt? Jairus’ daughter was deathly ill and this woman had plenty of time to be healed. Hadn’t she waited 12 years already?

At this juncture Jairus was informed that his daughter had actually died. Imagine how disappointed he must have felt.

Jesus, overhearing this, responded, “Do not be afraid; only keep on believing [in Me and my power].” (Mk 5:36 Amp). Jairus did, and against all that Jairus had ever experienced or previously believed, his daughter was raised from the dead.

The message that we get from these 3 accounts is that if we choose to trust God at His word, we will not be disappointed. Faith is a choice. It’s a decision. Take God at His word and refuse to give up. Don’t look at the circumstances - look at the Healer and keep on believing.

Just read Psalm 91 to convince you that God has promised to care and protect you from all harm. It may take time, but God’s faithfulness will become evident.

Psalm 91 (Amp)

1 HE WHO dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall remain stable and fixed under the shadow of the Almighty [Whose power no foe can withstand].

2 I will say of the Lord, He is my Refuge and my Fortress, my God; on Him I lean and rely, and in Him I [confidently] trust!

3 For [then] He will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence.

4 [Then] He will cover you with His pinions, and under His wings shall you trust and find refuge; His truth and His faithfulness are a shield and a buckler.

5 You shall not be afraid of the terror of the night, nor of the arrow (the evil plots and slanders of the wicked) that flies by day,

6 Nor of the pestilence that stalks in darkness, nor of the destruction and sudden death that surprise and lay waste at noonday.

7 A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand, but it shall not come near you.

8 Only a spectator shall you be [yourself inaccessible in the secret place of the Most High] as you witness the reward of the wicked.

9 Because you have made the Lord your refuge, and the Most High your dwelling place, [Ps. 91:1, 14.]

10 There shall no evil befall you, nor any plague or calamity come near your tent.

11 For He will give His angels [especial] charge over you to accompany and defend and preserve you in all your ways [of obedience and service].

12 They shall bear you up on their hands, lest you dash your foot against a stone. [Luke 4:10, 11; Heb. 1:14.]

13 You shall tread upon the lion and adder; the young lion and the serpent shall you trample underfoot. [Luke 10:19.]

14 Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore will I deliver him; I will set him on high, because he knows and understands My name [has a personal knowledge of My mercy, love, and kindness–trusts and relies on Me, knowing I will never forsake him, no, never].

15 He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him.

16 With long life will I satisfy him and show him My salvation.
