My brother in law remarked yesterday that his 3 month old granddaughter engages with him on an eye to eye level and gives him smiles. We all love the innocence, guilelessness and total vulnerability of a new little baby and we melt when that little being recognises and responds to us.
Isn’t that how God first shone His face on us when He revealed Himself in Jesus? When God became flesh He did it in a non-threatening way. He didn’t enter our world with weapons to annihilate us because of our sin, He came into our world in a humble and lowly manner so that in love He would appeal to us to return to Him.
We were lost in our sin. We had no way out. We were on the way to hell and eternal damnation but God solved our dilemma in the most vulnerable and expensive way to Himself—He revealed Himself as a baby.
This baby remained pure and true to every command of God throughout His entire life and died taking all of our sins upon Him. When we are convicted of our sin and decide to change our direction in life to following after Jesus, Jesus forgives us of our sin and we have been rescued from hell.
Hell is real. Jesus spoke more of this frightening place than anything else in His messages to us while He was on this earth. He spoke of an everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels (Matt. 25:41), of people being cast them into a furnace of fire where there would be weeping and gnashing of teeth (Matt. 13:42) and of eternal punishment (Matt.25:46).
In hell, there is no fire engine coming to rescue you. No rescue vehicle. No police. No legal team. Once you find yourself in hell, you’re there for eternity.
The time to repent, to turn from your life away from God, is now. Don’t wait until it is too late.
God appeals to you in the face of a little baby—a little baby whose face has shone upon you since His birth and continues to shine on you when you look at Him.
“For God Who said, Let light shine out of darkness, has shone in our hearts so as [to beam forth] the Light for the illumination of the knowledge of the majesty and glory of God [as it is manifest in the Person and is revealed] in the face of Jesus Christ (the Messiah).(2 Cor. 4:6 AMPC).
“LORD God All-Powerful, make us strong again! Smile on us and save us” (Psa. 80:19 CEV). May God’s face continue to shine upon us all, through God’s son, our Saviour, Jesus. Amen
