“I am my beloved’s, and my beloved is mine. He feeds his flock among the lilies” (Song of Sol 6:3 NKJV).
We have here a beautiful description of unity, security and belonging within the marriage relationship. Even when her beloved husband had gone away to be in his garden to feed his flock, there remained a spiritual, emotional, physical and life bond between them.
In just the same way we belong to Jesus and He belongs to us. Jesus admitted that we were given to Him by God: “Of those whom you gave me I have lost none” (John 18:9 NKJV). The indisputable fact about our union with Jesus is that it is indissoluble. No-one and no thing can break our commitment to one another.
In a world where marriage is treated lightly, where partners stray away from each other or readily share the marital bed with others, Jesus has made us 3 promises about his relationship with us:
1. Jesus has promised everlasting faithfulness.
“And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of my Father’s hand” (John 10:28-29).
2. Jesus has promised everlasting security.
“For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God” (Col. 3:3).
3. Jesus has promised everlasting love.
“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written:
“For Your sake we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.”
Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom. 8:35-39).
If you’ve encountered the fickleness of human love and feel burnt, rest assured that in Jesus we have an eternal bond that nothing can break. This love will never end (I Cor. 13:8).
