Steps to communion with God

Yesterday I wrote about the enormous blessing that we have through Jesus in having the Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth and the light. We have Jesus with us even to the end of the age through the Holy Spirit (Matt. 28:20). Jesus actually lives inside of us through the Holy Spirit (Gal. 2:20 cf Rom. 8:9 and 1Pet.1:11). This is what is meant when Jesus talks about supping with us (Rev. 3:20) after we have opened the door to Him.

This is an enormous treasure that has been placed inside of us by the last Adam, a life-giving Spirit (1 Cor.15:45). “But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us”(2 Cor. 4:7). We become Christ-centred Christians when the Holy Spirit dwells within us. The more the Holy Spirit operates in our lives, the more we will love and honour Jesus.

The Holy Spirit offers us real fellowship with Jesus and the Father. "Indeed our fellowship is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ" (1John 1:3) and that fellowship is continuous, even better than when Jesus was physically beside the disciples. "I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper shall not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you" (John 16:7).

And just how does the Holy Spirit operate? For starters, He tells us who to talk to (eg Ananias being told to speak with Saul), future events (eg Agabus binding his feet and hands with Paul’s belt to demonstrate what was going to happen to Paul), He tells us what to say and when to say it (Luke 12:12) and He tells us we are loved and saved (Eph. 1:13, Rom. 5:5).

Be still and listen to God (Psa. 46:10). Don’t look for the spectacular but listen for the still, small voice. Don’t let the noise of this world control you because it will drown out the voice of the Spirit. If Sadhu Sundar Singh, an Indian Christian missionary, found the people of the west too busy to hear God in 1910, what would he think of us these days?

Get away from all the noise in your life – people, phones, books, TVs and listen to God in the peace and quiet of a tranquil environment. God wants to talk with us all the time and we are the ones who block that conversation.
