What does the Bible say about food?

A few years ago I was going through a very significant amount of heartbreak and I turned to food for comfort. In the midst of crying and eating I distinctly heard God say to me, “This is not the way I taught you to eat!”

I was really surprised. I had always believed that it was my parents who had taught me to eat. I couldn’t understand how God could have instructed me how to eat. It got me thinking.

Certainly God wants us to enjoy our food. Solomon wrote: “There is nothing better for a man than to eat and drink and assure himself that there is good in his labour. Even this, I have seen, is from the hand of God.” (Ecc. 2:24 AMP).

However, gluttony is mentioned many times in the Bible, even calling it idolatry (Phil. 3:19) and warning people to keep away from people who overeat (Prov. 23:20-21). We are also told to respect our bodies as they are God’s temple.

But does God actually instruct us how to eat?

Firstly, we find that God decreed WHAT we should eat. Going back to Genesis we find that after God had created the earth and everything in it He said: “Look! I have given you every seed-bearing plant throughout the earth and all the fruit trees for your food” (Gen. 1:29 NLT).

Jesus also provided nourishing food for crowds of people, bread and fish (Matt. 14:13-21) and on another occasion gave His disciples charcoal grilled fish and bread (John 21:9). God provided His people manna in the wilderness and quails (Ex. 16).

Secondly, we read in many places in scripture that God provided an instinct for the foods that He had designed for the birds and animals (eg Matt. 6:26; Psa. 36:6,147:9, 104:11,21; Job 38:41).

It stands to reason that if all of the animals have a divine dietary regime imprinted in them, then man also has been born with a divinely designed pattern for eating.

So with all this is mind, we can take control of our eating by allowing our divinely placed instincts to take over when we consider eating and what we eat. Take time to pause and listen to that inner voice and take control of your body.

I hope that knowing this will help you on your journey to gain better health and weight control.
