Where is God when it hurts?

I want it to stop. This past week has been too much.

A friend lamented to me that her son in law is carrying on with another woman while her daughter cries her eyes out. A friend’s friend has her baby mauled to death by a dog and they are inconsolable. A cousin said goodbye to all his friends and family and then put himself off life support. A doting father loses all access to his children by a faulty legal system.

Why is there so much grief and trauma in the world? Can the world get any worse?

And then my Bible falls open to Lamentations 4:10 and I read:

“Tenderhearted women have cooked their own children. They have eaten them to survive the siege.”

Things can get worse. We can even lose natural affection for our own babies and look on them as a food source.

We are not living in the world that God first created. We are living in a world that man destroyed by sin and the effects of that sin have been with us for thousands of years.

I can only wait for the King of the world to reappear and establish a righteous rule where there is no more pain and suffering and where mercy and kindness abound. Righteousness and peace will be the hallmarks of His reign.

But we are looking forward to the new heavens and new earth he has promised, a world filled with God’s righteousness” (2 Peter 3:13).

There is hope and we know that that hope is real.

All quotations are from the NLT.
